Rusty Old Bangers Compete in Car Jumping Competition

Motor madness as thrill seekers see out 2012 at the car jumping competition in Angmering, West Sussex. It is a leap of faith as rusty old bangers compete.

On Sunday, this year's Car Jumping Championship in West Sussex, England was nothing if not a leap of faith.

Spectators were treated to a rare glimpse of a 'gladiator' style Motorsport as old beat up cars accelerated off a ramp.

[Jim Hazel Grove, Race Organizer]
"You've got to be an idiot to start with or have total no fear and then it's just luck because you know it depends on the pitch of the car, how long you hold the throttle. There is a technique and only the top three or four drivers know the technique, the rest of them have just gone out there to be stunt men."

The goal was to fly over a line of ten wrecked cars and to land safely on the other side.

However the most dramatic crashes inevitably got the biggest applause.

In total 10 cars competed, all of which were casualties of banger racing, with varying degrees of knocks and dents.

One at a time, each of the Bangers began from a standing start and then hit the gas as they took off the jump.

Each attempt was judged on elevation, the applause of the crowd, and most importantly distance. Only a few made the jump across all ten cars.

In the end it was 31-year old John Harbour who took the title.

This car mechanic from Crowley, West Sussex cleared all the cars with the best flair.

Harbour has been racing bangers for six years and was delighted to take the trophy. He was especially pleased since he entered the competition at the last minute.

While he won no prize money he does earn bragging rights, a trophy and a place in a stunt show next month at Santa Pod Raceway in England.
