Illinois Clergy Endorse Gay Marriage Bill. More than 250 faith leaders are for a measure that could be voted upon in January. Various religious leaders declared their support for same-sex couples on Sunday. They are quoted as saying, "we think that it is morally just to grant equal opportunities and responsibilities to loving, committed same-sex couples."
Robert Gilligan, the executive director of the Catholic Conference of Illinois, is in opposition to this endorsement from his fellow clergymen. Gilligan said, "The reason we're so vocal about laws that unite more than man and woman in marriage is it's (contrary) to human nature". He also stated, "some ministers out there would conclude our position is just right... We're talking about more than people in the pews."
