Clashes took place outside Mexico's Congress on Saturday (December 1) as Enrique Pena Nieto took over as the country's president.

Police fired tear gas to try to disperse the protesters, who rattled metal barriers in a bid to disrupt the swearing-in ceremony and inaugural address due later on Saturday morning. Additionally, protesters threw molotov cocktails which briefly set the barriers alight.

Several thousand protesters, mainly from leftist groups that supported Pena Nieto's main rival and oppose his reform plans, were massed outside Congress. Local media reports that several ambulances were called to the scene to treat people who were injured in the clashes.
