Dalai Lama Urges Tibet Self-Immolation Probe

Exiled Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, has urged Japanese lawmakers on Tuesday to visit Tibet to find out what's happening there. He also called on the Chinese regime to find the cause of the escalating Tibetan self-immolation protests. A record number of the suicides have occurred as the Communist Party's 18th Party Congress is underway.
Leader of Japans' Liberal Democratic Party, Shinzo Abe, welcomed the Dalai Lama as he addressed more than 100 Japanese lawmakers in Tokyo.
[Dalai Lama, Tibetan Spiritual Leader]:
"Those areas which (are) now very sad, sort of self-burnings, happen, so -- visit. I always ask the Chinese government: please now, (do a) thorough investigation, investigate. What are the causes of these sorts of sad things?"
A top United Nations human rights official recently asked the Chinese regime to address the mounting Tibetan self-immolations. Last week, Chinese authorities called demands for foreign investigators "arrogant" and maintained that the situation in Tibet is fine.
The Dalai Lama believes, however, that the Chinese regime is ignoring the facts.
[Dalai Lama, Tibetan Spiritual Leader]:
"Without knowing the reality, just (to) carry some policy according to their own philosophy or belief may not be realistic so that's very, very important. Not only (in) China but I think everywhere,"
Shinzo Abe, hopeful to become Japan's next Prime Minister, pledged to support Tibetans and put an end to their suppression by the Communist regime.
The Chinese regime has raised objections to Japan's hosting of the Dalai Lama. Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei named those who support Tibet as "right-wing forces."
Relations between Japan and China have been tense in recent months, following heated disputes over the ownership of a chain of islands in the East China Sea.
