Typhoon Son-tinh slams Vietnam

Strong winds and high seas here in Vietnam.

Typhoon Son-tinh battered the coast on Sunday with winds peaking at over 80 miles per hour.

By Monday the winds had considerably weakened, topping out just under 50 miles per hour.

But authorities reported that Son-tinh had caused widespread power outages in provinces north of Hanoi, and that thousands of residents had been evacuated from flood-prone areas to higher ground.

The typhoon was expected to move inland to the northwest, leaving Vietnam to clean up in its wake.
