Clashes broke out Monday (October 14) in the Chilean capital Santiago, where thousands of people marched through the city centre to draw attention to the struggles of the Mapuche, the country's largest indigenous community.

The protest coincided with Chile's public holiday that marks Christopher Columbus' arrival in the Americas in the 15th century and the controversially named, "Discovery of the Americas".

For many Mapuche it is a day of mourning, rather than a day of celebration.

The Mapuche have been fighting for formal state recognition of past inequities and alleged human rights abuses dating back to colonial times and have called for political and territorial rights.
