A tunnel collapsed on Sunday, leaving sixteen people trapped, along the Daqing-Guangzhou Expressway in China’s Jiangxi Province, local authorities said Monday.
Rescuers said they were able to dig a supply channel for oxygen, food, and water from the top of the tunnel to the victims and their voices could be heard. As of Monday, the rescue team had about 78 feet of earth and rubble left to reach the victims, after digging through almost 20 feet already.
The nearly 1000-foot tunnel was still under construction, and is part of an expressway that spans over 2000 miles from China's Heilongjiang Province in the northeast to Guangdong Province in the south. The tunnel collapsed in Longnan County in Ganzhou city at around 10:00pm Sunday.
