Staff have been evacuated from the US consulate building in Berlin after an employee reported a strange smell coming from an envelope.
A spokeswoman confirmed the suspect package was supposed to contain documents supporting a visa application and was hand delivered on Thursday morning.
No details about the person who delivered the letter have been released.
