STORY: A leading FARC rebel was killed Tuesday (September 4) in a jungle bombing in northeastern Colombia despite pending peace negotiations, the Colombian defence minister said on Wednesday (September 5).

The rebel, alias "Danilo García," was the leader of a mobile unit of the FARC and a close ally of the group's top leader, Rodrigo Londoño, alias "Timochenko." He died in a bombing near the Hacarí municipality in the Norte de Santander region, which borders Venezuela. Fourteen other rebels were also said to have been killed in the incident.

The death marks the first of a prominent leader of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) since President Juan Manuel Santos and the rebel group announced that they would begin peace talks in October to end the conflict that has lasted nearly five decades.
