Thousands of striking workers at Indonesia's largest gold and copper mine have blocked roads leading to the facility after several people were killed in recent violence surrounding the strikes.

The mine is in Indonesia's eastern Papua province, and sits on some of the world's biggest gold and copper reserves.

The Freeport-McMoran company says copper production is down to 50 per cent of normal levels and is urging the government to restore security.

But citizens say they will not allow operations to continue unless they demands for a better wage are met.

Al Jazeera's Step Vaessen reports from Jakarta.
