Al Jazeera's Bilal Randeree spoke to Erik Hersman at the TEDGlobal conference in Edinburgh, Scotland. Hersman spoke about innovation in Africa, and also highlighted how Ushahidi was still being used for the benefit of people globally.
During the Kenyan post-election crisis of 2007-2008, Hersman helped create the Ushahidi, a website to report incidents of violence via the web and texts.
The original Ushahidi tool was written in two days; later that year, it won the NetSquared Mashup Challenge.
It has since been used in Haiti, Japan, by Al Jazeera in Gaza and most recently, following the attacks in Mumbai.
