Typhoon Tembin flooded large areas, toppled houses and uprooted trees as it tore across southern Taiwan on Friday (August 24), Taiwanese media reported.

Pounding rain brought severe flooding to southern parts of the island, broadcaster CTS showed.

The typhoon made landfall early Friday morning, and the centre had left the island within an hour and headed out to sea.

The central Weather Bureau said that almost 600mm of rain fell in one area- the largest quantity since 1943, the Taipei Times newspaper reported.

In other areas, rescue workers rescued people and animals from houses.

Five people were injured by disasters related to the Typhoon, the Central Emergency Operation Center said.

Over 7,000 people were evacuated across the island, and around 30,000 houses lost power, while at least 18 roads roads were closed over fears that they might collapse.
