At least one person was killed and eight others injured.

Many were trapped in their homes, waiting for rescuers to arrive in their rubber boats.

(SOUNDBITE) (Mandarin) UNIDENTIFIED FLOOD VICTIM SAYING:

"It's horrible, the flood water came up to my ankle when we woke up about five o'clock (2100 GMT ON WEDNESDAY AUGUST 1) this morning. But the water level rose quickly to my knee high at six o'clock. The flood is just coming too fast."

Most domestic flights were cancelled along with some international services.

Officials expect Saola to weaken to a category 1 typhoon as it heads for southeast China.
