Pakistan has played a central role in what George Bush called the "War on Terror".

Since the 9/11 attacks, some 35,000 civilians and more than 3,000 security personnel have been killed in Pakistan as a result of fighting in the country.

The cost of the ongoing offensive against the Taliban and Al Qaeda is now approaching $68bn.

Al Jazeera's Imtiaz Tyab reports from Islamabad.
