UK admits Libya mission failure

William Hague, the UK's foreign minister, has acknowledged he personally authorised a failed diplomatic mission to anti-government fighters in Libya.

Eight members of a special forces team were captured by the fighters as they landed in the country's east hoping to make contact with the opposition.

They have now been released, but the events have been an embarrassment for Britain's government.
