Survivors of a ferry accident in the Indian Ocean off Tanzania are brought ashore.

The overcrowded vessel sank near the island of Zanzibar on Wednesday.

At least 40 people, including an American citizen, were confirmed dead and 145 were rescued. 100 people were still missing.

On Thursday hundreds gathered to identify the bodies of the victims.

Officials say the ferry was carrying 290 people, 40 more than its capacity.

Some of the victims' relatives are angry at lax safety regulations, especially after more than 200 people were killed in another ferry sinking last September.
