The brave men and women who undertake rescue operations during disasters are undoubtedly our heroes. And it's heartbreaking when things don't go as expected.

A California Highway Patrol officer was on a mission to rescue a stranded hiker. As he started to go towards the hiker, he got struck by his chopper's rotor blade, causing serious injury.

The helicopter had landed close to the Big Bear Lake.

Fortunately, the injured hiker, Jeremy Kilburn is a doctor and he was quickly brought over by others to the side of California Highway Patrol Officer so he could provide medical aid.

The Officer is currently being treated in a nearby hospital.

In another rescue operation recently, a Utah Highway Patrol officer died after he fell off a cliff. He was responding to a call by 2 teenagers who were stranded on the top of Mount Olympus.

One of the most publicized rescue stories in recent times, ofcourse, was of the Chilean Miners. It had a happy ending as all the miners and rescue team members survived the ordeal.
