Hollywood actress Hilary Swank has apologised for attending the birthday party of Ramzan Kadyrov, the president of Chechnya.

Swank and other celebrities, including action star Jean Claude van Damme, violinist Vanessa Mae and the British singer Seal, attended the event for the president who has been accused of human rights abuses.
"I deeply regret attending this event," said Swank. "If I had a full understanding of what this event was apparently intended to be, I would never have gone."
