Angela Merkel, the German chancellor, faces an uphill battle to get Christian Wulff, her candidate, elected as president in a vote to be held on Wednesday.
Merkel's popularity ratings have hit their lowest ever, damaged in part by Germany's bailout for Greece, which is costing German tax-payers billions of dollars.
Many political analysts agree that a loss for Wulff may trigger an early election.
