Celebrations over Songkran - the Thai new year - have been overshadowed by widespread grief after 21 people were killed on Saturday in clashes between the so-called red shirts and troops in Bangkok.

Another 800 were injured on the bloody day.

For more than a month, the protesters have been demanding the resignation of the Thai government and fresh elections.

Al Jazeera's Tom Birtley reports from Bangkok.
