Barack Obama, the president of the United States, is due to announce the US' troop strategy for Afghanistan on Tuesday.

His senior military commander has asked for 40,000 more troops.

But domestic support for the war has been on the decline. Only 35 per cent of the US population say they approve of Obama's handling of the war, and 57 per cent of his fellow Democrats disapprove of sending more troops.

Al Jazeera's Patty Culhane reports from Washington.
