The US has said that it will not take sides in Kyrgyzstan after opposition leaders seized power following nationwide protests.

But the Obama administration cancelled a scheduled meeting with the deposed foreign minister and instead communicated with the leaders of the new interim government.

The US maintains vital interests in Kyrgyzstan, which hosts a strategic military base that supplies Nato troops fighting in Afghanistan.
