Two American men have been questioned over the death in Japan of Irish exchange student Nicola Furlong, according to a police statement on Monday.

Twenty-one-year-old Furlong was found dead in a hotel in central Tokyo early on Thursday, and an initial autopsy indicated she may have been strangled.

The two men were arrested on Saturday for allegedly groping Furlong's friend, also a 21-year-old Irish woman, when they were travelling to the hotel.

The U.S. embassy in Tokyo said it was offering the two men consular assistance, but local police didn't immediately confirm where the pair were being detained.

Irish media reports that Furlong was taking part in an exchange programme at a university in Takasaki, about 70 miles from Tokyo - and was due to return to Dublin in July.

The two women had visited Tokyo on Wednesday night to see a concert by hip hop artist Nicki Minaj, and are beieved to have met the two men on their way home.
