Battle for Libya: Pro-Gaddafi army fires first scud missile

A US military official has confirmed Libyan government forces have fired a scud missile for the first time in the country's six month uprising.

Until now Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi's forces have been using mainly grad rockets that travel up to 40 kilometers.

The missile landed in the desert east of Brega - but no-one was hurt.

Richard Weitz, director of the Centre for Political and Military Analysis at the Hudson Institute, told Al Jazeera the use of scuds may not be an escalation of the war but they do send a message.
