Hundreds of people in Indonesia with mental illnesses are facing death from starvation and disease in state-run shelters.

In the past six months, more than 100 patients have died.

Dozens of people have been removed from the institutions and admitted to hospitals.

But as Al Jazeera's Step Vaessen reports many more remain trapped in desperate conditions.
