The war on Iraq has linked US and Iraq forever.

US troops are scheduled to leave Iraq soon, but the US invasion of Iraq has left deep military and political ramifications on the country and the Middle East.

US presidential candidates, Democratic Senator Barack Obama and his rival Republican Senator John McCain, have offered different approaches to the resolve the conflict in Iraq.

Obama wants US troops to be withdrawn within 16 months, but McCain wants US troops to be remain longer, based on conditions on the ground.

What are the long term military and political implications to these varying positions on Iraq? Will they have an impact on the outcome of the US elections?

This week Inside Iraq speaks to Michael Gordon, chief military correspondent of the New York Times, to get a deeper insight into the issues.
