The trial of Desi Bouterse, Suriname's former military leader, resumed on Friday. Bouterse, who is running in next year's presidential elections, faces murder charges for executing 15 political opponents in December of 1982.

Bouterese has played a leading role in the tumultuous history of his country since it gained independence from the Netherlands in 1975.

Al Jazeera's Monica Villamizar reports from Suriname, where Bouterse granted Al Jazeera a rare interview.
