Kofi Annan, the former UN secretary-general, will begin mediation talks between Kenya's opposing political parties.

Violence following disputed presidential elections has left at least 700 people dead and hundreds of thousands homeless.

But Annan faces a tough challenge. Weeks of negotiations have so far failed to stop the bloodshed.
