For centuries, candle-lit lanterns have symbolised the start of Ramadan. But an influx of lanterns produced in China is replacing the millions made in Egypt.
Lantern-maker Mohammad Balagha has plied his trade for more than 60 years.
In this first person report, he tells Al Jazeera of his efforts to keep the tradition alive.
