Prominent Seattle lawyer John Henry Browne will defend the American soldier accused of massacring 16 Afghan civilians.

"I've instructed our client - I have a hard time not saying his name - not to talk to us about any of the facts. We don't trust the phones so I think the only in-depth conversation we're going to have with him is going to be face to face."

The staff sergeant whose name has not yet been revealed was detained after the rampage near a U.S. military base in Kandahar.

Browne says the man's family is stunned.

"They were totally shocked. He's never said anything antagonistic about Muslims, he's never said anything antagonistic about Middle Eastern individuals. He's in general been very mild-mannered so they were totally shocked by this."

Browne is known for his defence of the serial burglar known as the Barefoot Bandit.

Teenage runaway Colton Harris-Moore was jailed for six and a half years for a sensational crime spree in which he often wore no shoes.

It's not yet known when the soldier accused of the Afghan massacre will go on trial.
