Up until now, best known as founding member and drummer of Bruce Peninsula and collaborator with Timber Timbre, Steven McKay, a Toronto/Hamilton, ON native, is releasing his debut solo album.
Drawing influence from The Zombies, Free Design, early Cat Stevens and AM Gold hits McKay's self-titled album is doused in a warm 60/70's air. Produced and engineered by Leon Taheny (Final Fantasy, Ohbijou) the songs range from stripped down rootsy folk, bright sunshine pop to dark proggy, dance rhythms. Touching on ideas of urban decay, home sickness, Canadian landscape, and old friends, the songs utilize rich percussion, smart lyrics, accompanied by gorgeous vocal harmonies and embellished by cheeky chimes and fun vintage synthesizer flairs.
As a drummer, singer, guitarist and whistler extraordinaire, McKay is a sought-after collaborator. In the past two years, he has worked with Timber Timbre, Thom Gill (Owen Pallett, THOMAS, Katie Stelmanis), Tusks, Casey Mecija (Ohbijou), Drew Smith (The Bicycles), Maylee Todd, and many more.
As the solo act, Steven McKay and his band, have played all over Ontario, opening for Cuff the Duke, Elliott Brood, Jim Guthrie, and Danny Michel among others. Made up of guitarist Thom Gill, bassist Bram Gielen, vocalists Allie Hughes and Alex Samaras and drummer Eric Woolston, Steven's live show is celebrated for its instrumental precision, charming and amusing stage banter and beautiful vocal performances.
Steven McKay and his band will be on the road in Fall 2010 and again in early 2011 to promote this self titled release.
