Pikine is an urban area within the Dakar Region of the city of Dakar with an approximate population of 835,000. Guinaw Rail Sud is the poorest neighbourhood of Pikine with a population of 56,000.
This location is in an area where malaria is endemic and seasonal and therefore considered high risk. Guinaw Rail's inhabitants are severely affected by flood water each year during the rainy season. According to the International Journal of Epidemiology, malaria is the leading cause of death for 1-9 year old children in Senegal. There is also a high prevalence of severe anaemia in these children.
