New Yorkers call for Shalit's release
American officials called for the immediate release of Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit saying his continued detention violated basic decency. Noam Shalit is currently in New York meeting with U.S. government officials, ambassadors and human rights organizations in an effort to garner support for his son's release. Susan Rice the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations said she was honored to meet Noam Shalit 1,900 days after his son was taken captive. She called for Gilad Shalit's unconditional release. New York City proclaimed Wednesday Gilad Shalit Day. Last month San Francisco Mayor Edwin Lee declared August 28 Gilad Shalit Day in the city, coinciding with the soldier's 25th birthday, the sixth in captivity.
