Introduction to MOTHER TERESA

Mother Teresa of Calcutta became the world's most recognizable symbol of compassion in the second half of the 20th century. Starting out in a slum in Calcutta in 1948, her work soon spread all over the world. The Missionaries of Charity - Sisters and Brothers - is today present in over 100 countries on all continents. The rich as well as the poor were moved to tears by the selflessness of the nun in a white sari with a blue border. Mother Teresa was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 in recognition of her exemplary service to humanity. The 'saint of the gutters' had indeed given new meaning to the word charity with her mission of mercy.
