And in Pakistan, a suicide bomber rams an explosive-laden vehicle into a paramilitary building in the city of Bannu, killing nine people. The Pakistani Taliban have claimed responsibility for the attack.

A suicide bomber rammed an explosives-laden vehicle into a paramilitary building in the northwestern Bannu district early on Saturday (December 24), killing nine people, including five soldiers, and wounding 13, police officials said.

The building, which served as a camp office for the Tochi Scouts, a paramilitary force deployed in Pakistan's unruly tribal areas near the border with Afghanistan, was significantly damaged, police sources added.

A Reuters cameraman said the roof of the building had caved in and there were fears other soldiers could be buried under the rubble.

Locals said the attack happened in the early morning.

"It was 5:36 in the morning. We were all sleeping in our house. The doors and windows of our house have been shattered. Everyone is terrified. Around six people have been killed."

The Pakistani Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack.
