Competitors faced an uphill battle in the athletic wall-climbing championship in Jerusalem, Israel. One of the challenges was the longest climbing wall in the world. Our reporter was there and brings us the story.
Wall-climbing is an extreme sport, or an adventure sport, that has its own rules. The athlete has to reach the end of a track in a certain time, and each track has its own color of climbing stones. The stones set in the climbing track differ in size and in distance from one another.
The athlete uses his hands and legs to find hold during the climb, which requires planning as well as improvisation along the way. Upon reaching a target point the climber attaches a rope to a hook in the wall. This assures his safety and also enables him to reach his next target.
Climbers wear special shoes designed to increase friction and thereby prevent sliding. They also put powder on their hands, for the same purpose.
The big crowd that came to this arena to watch the Israeli championship in wall-climbing cheered and encouraged heartily the athletes as they were climbing up the walls, showing their competence. Netta, who was declared here the winner of the Women Championship, started her training in wall-climbing at the age of 6.
[Netta Fredman,Israeli Women's Wall-Climbing Champion]:
"Climbing requires integration of several faculties. Physically, you need to have stamina and strength. Beyond that you need to have a certain mentality which helps you overcome difficulty. Climbing a wall does not happen by itself!.
Plus, you have to tell yourself not to quit and to keep on fighting on the next step, and another step, because the goal is to reach the end, to reach the highest possible point.”
