STORY: A magnitude 5.7 earthquake hit 17 km south of the eastern Turkish city of Van on Wednesday (November 09), the California Integrated Seismic Network reported, and Turkish state television showed live images of at least one collapsed building and injured people.
The earthquake struck at 1923 GMT (2123 local time) at a depth of 4.8 kilometres, it said.
The earthquake comes less than three weeks after a 7.6 magnitude quake hit just northeast of Van, near the Iranian border, killing some 600 people.
State television channel TRT Haber showed live images of at least one collapsed building in the town of Edremit, on the outskirts of Van. Panicked people could be seen running through the streets and ambulances rushed through the town with their sirens wailing.
It was not immediately clear whether anybody had been killed but TRT Haber showed rescue workers searching a collapsed building.
