Contestants Arrive for NTD's International Chinese Vocal Competition

NTD's 5th annual Chinese International Vocal competition is kicking off today in New York. Contestants have come from as far away as Hong Kong and Taiwan to compete in three days of recitals. The winners will get to perform in a special concert at Carnegie Hall on Sunday night. We spoke to some of the contestants as they arrived in New York.

This year, NTD is holding its 5th International Chinese Vocal Competition. It starts on October 28th, and goes until the 30th in New York City. Contestants have come from all over the world to take part.Xie Fangzhong from Hong Kong says her teacher encouraged her to enter the competition.

[Xie Fangzhong, Contestant from Hong Kong]:
"My teacher really supports me and proposed for me to come over and enter this competition to get more and more experience."

At the competition, renowned Italian soprano Lucia Aliberti will give master classes for the contestants. Xie says she is looking forward to meeting her.

"Actually apart from the competition, I am also really looking forward to learning from a great master, because you have this professional singer coming to America. That will be a really good experience."

While the preliminaries and semi-finals will be held at Hunter College, the final will be held at Carnegie Hall—one of the world's premier classical music venues. In addition the gold winners from the male and female categories will get to join Lucia Aliberti and perform at a special concert organized by NTD at Carnegie Hall on Sunday night—The Chinese Future Stars Recital.

"If you want to perform at Carnegie Hall, there aren't many opportunities for that, you have to make your way there through singing well. Strive hard."
