The Polish President makes a surprise appearance at Poland's biggest NGO event, the week-long Non-Governmental Initiative Forum in Warsaw. The event promotes civil involvement and citizen initiatives, hallmark features of healthy democracies. Our correspondent brings us the story.

And in Warsaw Saturday, non-government organisations, or NGO's, team up with business and government from across Poland to wrap up a week of promoting civil involvement and citizen initiatives.

Even the President of Poland and the First Lady have come out to throw their weight behind the 6th Polish Non-Governmental Initiative Forum.

"This is the sixth time now that we've held the Polish Non-governmental Initiative Forum and it's basically a celebration of the Third Sector that takes place once every three years. A bit less officially, it's a place where we can all meet in one place and talk about important issues. We have a two-day conference attended by about one thousand delegates. And then there's one day devoted to all of us - but also to Warsaw residents - called the NGO Picnic. We hit the streets and Warsaw starts to feel in the NGO spirit."

According to one panelist the discussions at the 2-day conference that are part of the Forum focused on all manner of pressing issues facing civil society today.

For many organisations, like this microfinance network with operations in Central Asia and Eastern Europe, the NGO picnic is a way to integrate its efforts with other NGOs.

A vibrant civil society, or Third Sector as it's also called, is said by organisations like the United Nations to be one of the hallmarks of a healthy democracy.
