Surfing practice is well underway on the Qiantang River, as the famous Qiantang tidal bore arrives at East China's Meinv Dam. Every year around the Mid-Autumn Festival, visitors gather to watch the spectacular tide.
The spectacular Qiantang River tidal bore hit the Meinv Dam in Xiaoshan County in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province three hours after it formed.
Contestants at the Qiantang River International Surfing Competition were practicing just before the tidal bore arrived.
The site of the T-shaped Meinv Dam, which translates as the "Dam of Beauty," is a famous spot for observing the tides.
The 1400-foot-long dam is just like a huge arm inserted into the middle of the Qiantang River. It blocks the rolling tide, which arrived at around one in the afternoon, turning it back for the first time.
The tide kept on moving and hit the Pantouding Dam about a mile away, turning back for a second time. Both waves were surging several meters high before making impact.
