5th/6th August 2011. Mark Duggan, 29, is the dead 'gangster' whose death sparked the Tottenham riots. Duggan was in a car being followed by police during a covert operation on Thursday. But Duggan, a known criminal from London's notorious Broadwater Farm Estate, became aware that he was being followed. The Police challenged the man and shots were fired. The bullet which was lodged in the police radio that the undercover officer was carrying in a side pocket, came from another police officer. Armed officers shot the man dead seconds later. Twenty-six police officers were injured in riots that broke out. So far police have made over 40 arrests in connection with the trouble, in which police cars, shops and a double-decker bus were set ablaze and there was widespread looting.
