00:00On the 23rd of August 1971, Superintendent Gerry Richardson was tragically shot and fatally
00:06wounded while attempting to stop an armed robbery in Blackpool. Upon hearing of the incident,
00:11Gerry responded without hesitation to support his officers and began to pursue the offenders.
00:18We all know too well what followed. Today we mark this solemn anniversary and honour
00:23his memory. The selfless actions of many on that day must never be forgotten. It's right
00:30that we continue to remember all who responded with courage and professionalism but especially
00:36Superintendent Gerry Richardson who selflessly gave his life in the pursuit of his duty.
00:44Gerry left behind loved ones, family, friends and colleagues and we must also recognise the
00:50bravery of those who support our officers. Gerry's legacy lives on through the work of the Gerry
00:56Richardson Memorial Trust. In his name, the Trust has provided financial support to thousands
01:02of young people across Blackpool and the surrounding area. This enduring impact is a testament to
01:08Gerry's spirit and values. Long may this continue. Recent events remind us that policing remains
01:14a profession like no other. One that demands bravery, resilience, willingness to face danger in the service
01:22of others. Tragically, some officers pay the ultimate price. That is why we're here to remember,
01:29to reflect and to pay tribute.
