The nervous system can be divided into the central nervous system (brain and spinal nerves) and the peripheral nervous system (somatic, autonomic and enteric components). The somatic peripheral nerves carry messages between the spinal cord and body. The sensory nerves carry messages towards the brain, such as information about pain, pressure, temperature and joint position. The motor nerves carry impulses to the muscles to control muscle contraction/relaxation. The nerves leave the spinal cord through gaps between the vertebrae (intervertebral foramina), and travel to all parts of the trunk and limbs.
