Chinese Police Arrest 90+ in Inner Mongolia

Nearly 100 people in Inner Mongolia have been arrested after the recent demonstration sparked by the death of a Mongol herder. Chinese authorities last week blamed the unrests on unnamed "foreign sources", and the region remains under heavy police presence.
Chinese authorities have arrested more than 90 people in Inner Mongolia, rights groups have reported. It comes after the recent wave of demonstrations in the region that started after a Han Chinese mining truck driver ran over and killed a Mongol herder who was trying to stop the truck from entering pastures on May 10.
The U.S.-based Southern Mongolian Human Rights Information Center says 40 Mongol students and herders were detained in Xilingol, where the protests first began. Another 50 have been arrested in the region's capital of Hohhot.
While Chinese authorities have tried to appease locals with a series of promises, they have also mobilized security forces to end the demonstrations.
A rights group based in Germany, Inner Mongolian League for Defense on Human Rights, says the latest arrests follow a typical pattern of the communist regime.

"The CCP has this habit, it may say everything is fine on the surface in order to deceive people, it might smile at you and shake your hand, but it'll proceed to arrest you and make you miserable. Also, it's after retribution. Thirdly, they want to make an example out of people to prevent further problems."
Mongol herders have long been unhappy about increased coal mining activities in the region. Many feel their way of life is being threatened as pastures are turned into barren mining fields.
