A former mayor in China was given a suspended death sentence for bribery on Monday, according to state-run Xinhua News Agency.

Xu Zhongheng was the mayor of Shenzhen. The southern city has been the poster child for the Chinese regime's economic reform policies.

Xu was found guilty of taking more than five million dollars in bribes from building material companies between 2001 and 2009. A court in central Henan province sentenced him to death with a two year reprieve.
