One thing closely related to Easter is colored and decorated eggs. There are all kinds of ways and techniques of how to decorate Easter eggs. The scrape etching method is one of the most difficult techniques which is used chiefly in Slovacko, in south region of Moravia bordering Slovakia. Here you can find the best Easter egg makers.

Two neighbors and longtime friends in Moravia, the Czech Republic are keeping the tradition of egg carving alive.

Moravia borders Slovakia, an old region, where you can find many folk traditions, including egg-carving.

But in recent years the tradition has almost died out.

Terezie Pistekova says the traditions have gradually been lost since the old residents have been replaced by people from the city.

[Terezie Pistekova, Artist]:
"There were mines here, plenty of mines; there's a brick factory too so we had many people from other regions come to live here...then it all started to decline."

Katerina Gasnarkova remembers that Easter egg decorating was a skill many possessed in the old days.

[Katerina Gasnarkova, Artist]:
"We colored them in the summer, and then in winter, when we had more time, we would carve them."

Typical colors of Slovacko's Easter eggs are black and white, from a mixture of Indian ink and varnish.

[Terezie Pistekova, Artist]:
"The egg must be white and hard-boiled. After it's boiled, you have to color it (instantly) or it won't stay there. It will dry out right away. We leave the color on for two days to work and then it's easy to scrape."

The tool used for etching is a well sharpened file made of good-quality steel.
