It was a sombre moment for residents of Japan's Ofunato City. Earlier today, they joined the rest of the country to observe a minute of silence for those who lost their lives in last week's earthquake and tsunami.

Residents of Japan's Ofunato City joined the rest of the country on Friday for a minute of silence in memory of the victims of the massive earthquake and tsunami one week ago.

A siren sounded at 2:46 p.m. to mark the start of silence for the thousands who lost their lives in the double disaster. The death toll in Ofunato currently stands at 208.

About a quarter of houses in the coastal city of 42,000 houses have been destroyed. Very few buildings are left standing.

The fishing industry, that has flourished in this bayside town facing the Pacific, is certain to reel from the calamity.

The number of confirmed deaths from the 9.0-magnitude quake and tsunami has reached nearly 6,400 and more than 10,000 are still missing.

Iwate Prefecture has reported nearly 1,900 people dead and 4,000 missing.
