A court in Peshawar, Pakistan grants bail to U.S national Mark DeHaven arrested for illegally staying in the country after his visa expired. DeHaven was working as a security contractor near the border with Afghanistan.

An American, identified as Aaron Mark DeHaven was released on over $23,000 bail on Tuesday by order of a local court. He was arrested in Pakistan's northwestern city of Peshawar for overstaying his visa.

DeHaven was arrested last month in a residential area in Peshawar, close to the lawless tribal belt near the Afghan border.

Police said he was working for security contractor Catalyst Services, providing security and accommodation to foreigners working on development projects in the region.

His visa expired in October.

DeHaven was seen on Tuesday escorted by police leaving the jail where he had been imprisoned.

Court officials say DeHaven's lawyer told the court his client had come to Pakistan on a work visa, and had applied for an extension of his visa that expired in October 2010.

The judge accepted the bail plea, but restricted DeHaven from leaving the city without prior information.

The court says since it's a case of illegal stay and not of illegal entry, it would be an injustice to make DeHaven stay in jail till the final disposal of the case.
