Two years ago Australia experienced its worst bushfires. Flames raged across several towns in the state of Victoria, burning homes and killing 173 people. Residents of two towns at the center of the disaster got together Monday for a memorial service to remember the victims.
These are the residents of Kinglake and Marysville, towns in Australia's Victoria state.
They have come together for a private memorial service to remember those killed in Australia's worst ever bushfires.
Two years ago bushfires raged through this area destroying homes... taking the lives of 173 people.
The memorial service comes at a time when the country battles several disasters at once.
Queensland has suffered from its worst ever floods in a century before a Category 5 tropical cyclone devastated the state's far north.
And over the weekend, bushfires across Western Australia destroyed more than fifty homes while flash flooding is affecting parts of Victoria state.
Witnessing all these disasters was a bit too much for some residents.
[Buffi Leadbeater, Kinglake Resident]:
"It's been very hard for the community for the last few months."
The rebuilding of these communities has been slow, with some here criticizing the local government.
[John Dowdel, Kinglake Resident]:
We were promised the world and got an island instead."
Victoria's Police Minister Peter Ryan is reassuring survivors that the government is doing everything to deliver its promises.
[Peter Ryan, Victoria Police Minister]:
"And I renew the undertaking that's been given on behalf of the government; these people will never ever be forgotten."
For those attending this memorial service, February 7, 2009 is remembered as Black Saturday.
