A cinema roof collapses during a heavy storm, injuring patrons in the Australian town of Bathurst. 46 people were trapped in the debris, but were freed mostly unharmed by rescue workers.

More than forty people escaped after a cinema ceiling came crashing down on them Monday. It happened in the Australian town of Bathurst, about 125 miles west of Sydney.

Two internal ceilings of the Metro Cinema buckled under the weight of heavy rain, hail and 50 mile-per-hour winds just before one in the afternoon.

[Molly Cole, Injured Patron]:
"We heard the hail hit the roof and then it sounded like water was coming in up near the screen and then the whole ceiling collapsed."

One of the cinemas affected was showing a children's movie at the time of the collapse.

All of the children in the theatre escaped without serious injury but many were shocked.

[Claire Wilmington, Cinema Audience Member]:
"And then a big bang went and the whole roof just started collapsing down."

Emergency services managed to free all 46 patrons trapped inside.

[Scott Rainnie, State Fire Rescue Worker]:
"With the people that were trapped we used our thermal imaging cameras, which is a specialist piece of equipment to help us identify where all those people were. Luckily no one was injured and we were able to help, with all services, get all the people out."

No one was seriously hurt but three women, including a pregnant woman, were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
